Fast Fashion: The Bad and The Ugly

It’s tough to love our clothes and be happy with what we own when big retailers like Topshop are constantly releasing brand-new styles of clothing on the daily. If you’re thinking of heading out to the winter sales”, spare a moment to think about the impact fast fashion has on the environment.

Fast fashion is particularly bad for the environment due to the pressure to reduce the cost of items, and then the time it takes to get a product from design to the shop floor. Environmental corners are likely to be cut, this includes water pollution, the use of toxic chemicals and increasing levels of textile waste.

Vibrant pieces of clothing are very appealing in the fashion market, however, to achieve those colours toxic chemicals are used. Textile dyeing is the second largest polluter of clean water globally, after agriculture.

Polyester is another huge problem for the environment. When polyester garments are washed in domestic washing machines, they shed microfibres that add to the increasing levels of plastic in our oceans. Cotton is another problem. Cotton growing requires high levels of water and pesticides to prevent crop failure, which can be problematic in developing countries that may lack sufficient investment and be at risk of drought.

What can you do?

Choosing an eco-friendly fabric is complex as there are pros and cons to all fibre types. Recycled content, however, is often best of all. Yes, ladies and gents’ vintage fashion is actually better for the environment. Not only do you get to stand out from the crowd in our one of a kind vintage treasures, but you’re also helping our planet that little bit more. Going vintage reduces the pressure on virgin resources and tackles the growing problem of waste management.
